The SurveyUSA hack governor's race poll

Last night at 6 and 10, WFAA-TV, Channel 8, Dallas, (A defendant in WorldPeace's lawsuit to stop the Hispanic debates) reported a SurveyUSA gubernatorial poll as follows: Sanchez 35%: Morales 32%; WorldPeace 9%; Lyon 6%. The write up was taken off the WFAA-TV web site after 10 pm. 

This morning, the San Antonio Express in a News Brief reported that the numbers were the same as the WFAA-TV report except that it showed Bill Lyon at 9% and WorldPeace at 6%.

The bottom line is that the SurveyUSA poll is just a hack poll as evidenced by the numbers they projected three days before the December 1, 2001, Houston Mayoral Race: 53% for Sanchez and 46% for Brown. Brown won the race forty eight hours later: Brown 52% and Sanchez 48%.

Based on the number of hits to my web site, my email, the reponses from the events where I speak, and the fact that Sanchez just hired two big guns to help in his campaign plus his intended use of email spamming as was announced yesterday, it really doesn't seem like he is way out front.

The governor's race is just getting started and it is very volatile. I doubt that anyone will be able to call the race even the day before the March 12, 2002 Primary. I have always believed that the race would hinge on the last two weeks.

One thing that I told the audience last night at the University of Texas (where Dan Morales did not show and Dwana Dukes spoke for Sanchez as she has done on at least five prior occasions when I appeared) this will be the first time that the internet web sites will determine the race. 

The press skews the news based on advertising dollars, the Party bosses have their agenda, and anyone can look cool in a slick Hollywood commercial. But the web site is where people can see exactly what a candidate is saying without the press, Party or commercial filters. It is where a candidate will have to respond to accusations and just like in court, when a fact is not rebutted, it is deemed true.

Sanchez has no agenda. Morales has no web page. Only WorldPeace has an agenda and an in depth discussion of all the issues on an extensive web page.

It is still very important to see people face to face and shake hands, but in the future, before an election, people are going to compare web pages to decide on who they will support at the polls. 

The most positive benefit will be the dramatic reduction in the cost of running a campaign. 

The most dramatic effect will be the fact that the common man will be able to run for office.

Houston Mayor Lee Brown narrowly won re-election to a third term Saturday, beating back a strong bid by City Councilman Orlando Sanchez .

With about 99 percent of precincts reporting, Brown had a 52 percent to 48 percent lead. More voters participated in the runoff than the 288,000 who voted in the Nov. 6 general election...

Houston, Texas - With three days to go until the runoff, a poll released by the nationally respected SurveyUSA today indicates Orlando Sanchez leads Lee Brown by 7 points in the race for mayor.

Riding a surge of momentum and energy that has included the endorsement of President George W. Bush, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, Sanchez's numbers continue to rise.
"While it is good to see the polls are reflecting the continuing momentum of this campaign, it is important to remember that the election won't be decided by polls but by the people. On Saturday, Houstonians will have the opportunity to vote for change and get Houston moving again. Briefs: Poll shows Morales leads senator's race

Victor Morales is leading the Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate, according to a KSAT-TV poll released Wednesday by the San Antonio television station.

The statewide poll, conducted by Survey USA, a national polling firm, indicated that 34 percent of likely voters in the Texas Democratic primary would choose Morales, a schoolteacher from Crandall, if the election were held today.

Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk came in second with 21 percent of the vote, followed by U.S. Rep. Ken Bentsen, D-Houston, who garnered 19 percent. Gene Kelly, a perennial candidate from Universal City, has 6 percent of the vote, and Austin attorney Ed Cunningham had 4 percent. Sixteen percent of the voters were undecided.

KSAT-TV spokeswoman Bernice Luna said the U.S. Senate poll has a margin of error of 3.7 percent.

In the gubernatorial race, Laredo businessman Tony Sanchez and former Attorney General Dan Morales are in a statistical dead heat. Sanchez garnered 35 percent of likely Democratic primary voters while Morales got 32 percent. Bill Lyon was selected by 9 percent of those polled and John WorldPeace by 6 percent. Seventeen percent of the voters remained undecided. 

The gubernatorial poll had a margin of error of 3.8 percent.
