The Pace of Change

John acknowledges that there are many problems in society and everyone needs to be committed to the betterment of society as a whole. We have inherited a system of government from our founders which emphasizes the highest of ideas and yet continues to manifest injustice and the disenfranchisement of people of color and women. We have inherited a system of government which needs immediate change but due to the dynamic complexity of society, even the smallest changes can manifest unforeseen negative repercussions. Therefore, John's position is to make government work better, but to go about change judiciously. Radical change tends to create more problems that it solves. We cannot make a perfect world , ever; and we cannot achieve the ideals of our founding fathers overnight. What we can do is steadily make government better and at the same time keep the trauma of change at a minimum. John's commitment is to leave to the next generation a better government than he inherited and not to create chaos in the wake of rapid social change.
